Beginning tonight, Kansas Citians can enjoy fine under-the-stars theater as the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival brings �Julius Caesar� to Southmoreland Park.
Virtually all of Shakespeare is enduring, but �Julius Caesar� is one of the Bard's most fascinating plays for its perspective on historical events created by human ambition and moral dilemmas.

Stratford Festival does its best with talky 'Timon'

After the first act of Shakespeare's 'Timon of Athens' at Stratford, one wonders why it's staged so rarely. Stephen Ouimette's imaginative, modern-dress production looks like something out of 'The Great Gatsby,' sounds a little like disco night at some trendy club and feels a bit like 'Waiting for Godot.' It's stylish, it's got attitude, the characters are sharply delineated, and their motivations are clear, all of which make the plot easy to follow: Timon, an incredibly wealthy man whose friends desert him when he runs out of money, leaves home and, shades of King Lear, stands out in the rain and rails against the failings of humankind"

Royal Shakespeare Company Will Teach and Perform At Davidson College During Residencies in 2005-2009
DAVIDSON, N.C., June 4 (AScribe Newswire) -- It won't exactly be Stratford-upon-Avon, but this historic college town might be referred to as 'Davidson-on-Lake Norman' for the next four years, as Davidson College again hosts the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) on its campus. Two years ago, nearly fifty members of the company spent two weeks at Davidson, teaching and presenting eleven performances of The Merchant of Venice.
The college has now contracted four additional annual residencies from 2005- 2009 that will immerse the campus in the Bard's stagecraft, literary genius, and lessons for life.
RSC actors and educational staff will spend about two weeks on campus each year, beginning March 6-20, 2005. They will take part in dozens of Davidson classes across the curriculum, and present public workshops. During 2005 and 2007, they will also present full productions of Shakespearean plays in the Duke Family Performance Hall. Those scheduled for 2005 are The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Julius Caesar.

Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre surprised audiences with a take on 'Julius Caesar' last year that included four-wheelers, soldiers in desert camouflage and modern warfare.
So what is the theater company up to this year?
'The Winter's Tale,' which opens next week, will plunge Fairbanks back into its longest season--temporarily. The set will include an ice rink and a ski ramp. Skaters and curlers are expected, as well as a dog team and snowball fights. At least one actor will make a skiing entrance down a 30-foot slope covered by white Astroturf."

LONDON (Reuters) - It wouldn't have happened in Shakespeare's day -- women on stage in his theater in one of his plays. Not only that, but women playing men!
But that has not deterred the all-female cast of the comedy 'Much Ado About Nothing,' being staged at London's Globe Theater, who work on the premise that women can portray men better than men can play women.
The play, part of the Star-Crossed Lovers season at the Globe -- a lovingly rebuilt replica standing 100 yards from the original site of Shakespeare's own theater destroyed by fire in 1613 -- runs to the end of June. "

Shakespeare inspires new composition

Before Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet descends into madness, she mutters: 'Good night ladies, good night sweet ladies.'
It is this text that jumped out at composer Ella Milch-Sheriff when she was skimming through the English playwright's works in search of text around which to compose her latest work.
The Ra'anana Symphonette had requested her to arrange a work centered on Shakespeare's canon, and she chose to focus on the three dominant female characters in the tragedies Hamlet, Othello, and Romeo and Juliet: Ophelia, Desdemona, and Juliet.
The world premiere of 'Good Night Sweet Ladies' will take place at Yad Lebanim in Ra'anana.
If Milch-Sheriff's past work is anything to go by, this latest work is sure to be a success. In March 2003, her piece 'Can Heaven Be Void for Singer, Narrator, and Orchestra' was premiered by the Ra'anana Symphonette and went on to win great acclaim from critics and audiences. The piece, based on texts from a diary written by the composer's father during the Holocaust, has since been performed in Europe and the US. "
